    The Photos

How do I find photos in the LIBRARY?
All photos and videos are tagged – by place, person, theme etc.. All tags appear to the right, arranged thematically.

When you choose a tag, result links for that tag will appear. You can narrow the results by choosing additional tags.

The tags you chose will appear above your results to the left. You can deactivate each tag by clicking on its respective 'x' to re-expand your results.

Where do the photo titles come from?
The photo titles were determined by the editors. If available, the original titles given by the photographers are indicated under "Details" in the information section. The video titles are, for the most part, those given by the directors. Only those videos submitted without a title were named by the editors. Original titles are indicated by quotation marks.

How exact are the geographical and chronological descriptions?
The editorial staff research the geographical and chronological aspects of each item as thoroughly as possible. However, it is often impossible to determine the exact location or time of photo taken 20 years ago. In such cases, the map view of the photos is an approximate one.

Some photos have as a location reference a whole area, which is represented in red on the map. All photos of the Berlin Wall that couldn't be exactly pinpointed have as a Geo-reference the location of the Berlin Wall memorial site on Bernauer Strasse.

Your notes and references in the comments help us to remedy these inaccuracies.

What do the brackets in the information section mean?
All editorial notes and addenda are denoted by brackets.

What does "Text in Image" mean?
Beneath the heading "Text in Image", you'll find all legible text from the photos transcribed. This makes it possible for you to search for content that appears on posters, banners, graffiti, and election and ad slogans in the free text field. Editorial notes and addenda are designated by brackets.

What do the tag definitions "depicts" and "context" mean?
"Depicts" tags appear as content in the photos. In addition, contextually relevant tags have been attributed to photos according to information and memories related by their photographers. To some extent, contextual tags were derived from other photos in the same series.

Why do unknown persons/organizations/locations/events have tags?
This kind of tagging enables a targeted search for unknown image content. Please supplement any missing information in a comment - that way, you can help us to better define image content.

How can I search tags for videos?
Videos were tagged in two ways: There are tags for the video as a whole, and for individual clips. The breakdown of the videos into clips makes a search for specific content easier. It is possible, however, that the content you searched doesn't appear until the end of the clip.
