"On the day of the church congress an assembly of Leipzig action groups converged on the concluding rally at the racetrack and then moved on towards the inner-city, carrying a banner (which bore the Chinese characters for democracy) and joined-together by colored ribbons. On the way a streetcar stopped alongside the protesters, apparently hijacked by members of the Stasi as three or four men in plain-clothes jumped out of an opening door, snatched the banner and jumped back onto the streetcar and immediately closed its doors. Further towards the inner-city, the street was blocked by rows of police and all the people ended up in St. Peter’s Church, from where they were eventually allowed to go home separately."
