Memory

"These photos were taken in Klement-Gottwald-Straße (now Brandenburger Straße), during a demonstration staged by the Potsdam opposition.

My wife and I found ourselves in the middle of the demonstration. Our son, who was seven at the time, was sitting on my shoulders. Suddenly, he shouted out: 'Dad! Look, in front of us – there are cops everywhere!' An announcement from the police command vehicle repeatedly urged everyone to disperse. The demonstration organisers advised families to leave, too. Riot police had already sealed off the side streets. We had to go back the way we’d come. It was really humiliating!"
