"After the demonstration on 4 November 1989 in Berlin, Bernau's mayor, Mr. Klein (SED), announced there had been no demonstration in Bernau, since things were fine there. Led by the Neues Forum, hundreds of demonstrators from Bernau showed this to be a lie. They demanded freedom of travel, free elections, and the end of state paternalism."
