"The picture of an elderly woman with a shopping trolley was taken on the Kurfürstendamm in the morning of 3 October 1990. It was around 9 o'clock and the avenue was still deserted. I left my guesthouse in the Mommsenstraße and was on my way to the former border crossing at Checkpoint Charlie. It was cool and I very nearly walked past this scene when I stopped and walked back a couple of paces. Social extremes meet right here on the boulevard."
