Die Nacht des Jubels ist vorbei / Heute kann man die Berliner Grenzen noch ohne Visum übertreten. Jede Stunde kommen noch immer Hunderte nach West-Berlin.

"I was an engineer and site manager in the telecommunications industry. In November 1989, I was working on a building site in Berlin-Spandau. On the evening of 9 November I didn’t hear anything about what was happening. It was not until I was on my way to work on 10 November that I heard on the radio that the GDR had opened the border. I drove to my construction site and gave the workers the day off without consulting anyone, then drove home to pick up my video camera. From there I drove first to the Brandenburg Gate and then to various border crossings, including Invalidenstraße, Friedrichstraße, Bernauer Straße, and Checkpoint Charlie, to record the event on video

Using this material, I later put together a little film. It also includes recordings of a drive from Berlin-Steglitz, via Ostpreußendamm and Hindenburgdamm to Teltow, which I undertook for the sole purpose of driving through the newly created border crossing. After driving 200 metres into GDR territory, I turned around and drove back. I made similar trips to the border crossings at Waltersdorfer Chaussee and Lichtenrade/Mahlow. I also filmed an outing from Berlin-Wannsee to Werder on a pleasure boat. Our passports were checked near the Glienicker Bridge."
