"The saying ''Das ist ja der Hammer, die Stasi in der Kammer' (It's awesome, the Stasi's in the chamber) expressed an apprehension that plagued many people at the time, and one which, to a certain extent at least, unfortunately proved true. And namely, that some of the old party followers resumed key positions. I was surprised that no one objected to the banners being left out on the building site."
