"In the early morning fog, on Kirchhainer Damm (the B96) at the former border crossing for garbage trucks in Lichtenrade, there was an endless stream of cars driving into Berlin. Many residents had gathered at this crossing to welcome people. Presents were handed out. The people in their cars could hardly believe they had reached the city limits and asked, 'Are we already in West Berlin?' Tears of joy flowed copiously on both sides."
